Sound familiar?

Four reasons South African websites lose customers.

Each one is common, measurable and fixable. Here is what goes wrong, and exactly what we do about it.

01The problem

Your site is heavy on mobile data

More than three quarters of South African page views come from phones, and many visitors pay for every megabyte. A page that loads slowly, or makes people pinch and zoom to find your number, sends them straight back to the search results.

77.26% of web page views in South Africa came from phones in September 2026, against 22.02% from desktops Source: StatCounter Global Stats, September 2026
How we fix it

A lean site designed for phones first

  • Images and scripts trimmed so pages stay light on prepaid data
  • Core Web Vitals targets written into the contract
  • WhatsApp, tap-to-call and directions always one tap away
02The problem

Buyers search, then shortlist your competitors

When someone in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban searches for what you sell, Google's first page, the map results and AI answers decide who makes the shortlist. If you are missing from all three, the buyer never reaches your site at all.

91.75% of searches in South Africa ran on Google in September 2026, across all devices Source: StatCounter Global Stats, September 2026
How we fix it

Get found on Google, Maps and AI search

  • SEO built on the phrases South African buyers type, suburb by suburb where it matters
  • A Google Business Profile for each branch, with every review answered
  • Google Ads judged on real enquiries, not clicks
03The problem

Enquiries arrive, then go cold

Your buyers often ask two or three suppliers at once. The one who answers clearly and quickly tends to win, while a form that asks for too much, or an enquiry left until the next day, hands the job to a rival.

How we fix it

Turn more visitors into enquiries

  • Pages that settle price, process and proof questions before the form
  • Short forms with a WhatsApp option for customers who prefer it
  • Instant confirmations and lead alerts, so you can answer while the buyer is still deciding
04The problem

POPIA and ECTA gaps put you at risk

POPIA requires consent for most electronic direct marketing and counts online identifiers as personal information, and ECTA lists what any site selling to consumers must disclose. If those disclosures are missing, a buyer can cancel within 14 days, and the Information Regulator can impose fines of up to R10 million.

How we fix it

POPIA and ECTA care built in

  • Marketing opt-in boxes left unticked, with an opt-out in every message
  • The ECTA section 43 disclosures in your footer and legal pages at launch
  • A POPIA privacy notice that matches your real forms and tools

Straight answers

Questions South African businesses ask.

How much does a website cost in South Africa?

A site of up to five pages starts at R5,000, an online store at R10,000, and a bespoke 6 to 15 page site usually lands between R9,000 and R11,000. That is close to local rates: SoWebsites' April 2026 guide puts properly scoped custom builds at R8,000 to R15,000. Where we differ is delivery, with a fixed price in rand, a written scope and a launch date in the contract.

What is included in the price?

Mobile-first design kept light for prepaid data, accessibility testing to WCAG 2.2 AA, Core Web Vitals targets in the contract, GA4 and enquiry tracking, and on-page SEO foundations. Forms, cookies and the privacy notice are set up for POPIA, marketing sign-ups use opt-in consent, and online stores carry the ECTA section 43 disclosures. You own the domain, hosting accounts, code and content. The calculator adds anything beyond that, such as copywriting, an Afrikaans or isiZulu version, or online booking.

Will my website be in English?

Yes. English is our standard for South African business sites, even though Census 2022 found it is the language most often spoken at home by only 8.7% of people, against 24.4% for isiZulu. If your customers prefer Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa or another official language, we add it as an extra language with its own keyword research. All project communication with us is in written English.

Does POPIA mean I need consent before sending marketing emails?

Usually, yes. Section 69 of POPIA prohibits electronic direct marketing unless the person has opted in, or is an existing customer who was given a free way to object when you collected their details. You may ask a non-customer for consent only once, and every message must name the sender and include a way to opt out. Our sign-up forms and email templates work this way by default.

Why choose a remote agency over a local studio at a similar price?

Because the price is similar, judge the process. We fix the price and scope in writing before work starts, put the launch date in the contract, register the domain and hosting to you, show progress on a staging link every week, and answer every question in writing within one working day. Most sites of 6 to 15 pages launch four to five weeks after you approve the proposal.

What must an online store in South Africa show customers?

ECTA section 43 sets the list: your full name and legal status, physical and email addresses, registration number, a description of the goods, the full price including delivery and taxes, payment terms, delivery times, your returns and refund policy, and your privacy and payment security policies. If items are missing, buyers may cancel within 14 days. We put every one in place before launch.

Can you rebuild our site without losing Google rankings?

Yes. With 91.75% of South African searches running on Google in September 2026, rankings are worth protecting. We crawl the old site, redirect every URL that earns traffic or links, carry over the content that ranks, and check Search Console daily for the first month after launch. Most redesigns go live four to seven weeks after you approve the proposal.
